Why does my Mercedes E class not open the boot?

Why is my car boot lock not working?
Initially I was only having trouble with it during long periods of warm and dry weather. As soon as it rained or at least a bit of moist in the air, the lock started working again, so I suspect some kind of electrical malfunction, maybe a poor connection somewhere.

Where is the boot release button on a car?
The good old location of the boot release lever has been on the floor of the car, just ahead of the driver’s seat, on the right. There are usually two levers placed here, one for opening the fuel lid and second is for popping open the boot hatch. Pull this lever gently to release the car boot lock.

Past: 83 380SL, 03 C230K Coupe, 15 C250 Sedan. When this problem started years ago, the roof opened all the way and I had to manually shut it. I learned then that the roof and sunshade can open but not close. For the last year, I would open the sunshade only, but not to the max open position, because that is where it gets stuck.
