There is a vacuum capsule on the cars right of the inlet manifold and these can snap their operating arm or the diaphragm inside can fail so the flap does not move and the potentiometer at the other end does not see it move and this feeds back to the ECU as an error.

When did the exhaust light come on on my VW Golf?
Mrs Hythan has a VW Golf Mk5 1.6 FSi, 2004. Exhaust emissions light came on shortly after buying it, about 4 months ago. The following faults came up when run through diagnostics; Now, all these faults were cleared, and the light extinguished. Apart from the car feeling pretty slow, there are no mechanical symptoms noticed at all.
