What are the most common problems with a used BMW 3 Series saloon? All of the engines in this generation of the 3 Series use a timing chain rather than a belt, but it’s still worth listening out for any ticking metallic sounds which might stem from a faulty tensioner. That aside, there’s really not a lot to report in terms of common problems.

What to do if your BMW 320i has a fault?
If there is a fault, the BMW garage should be able to read it, and tell you the fault code. That would help to confirm the diagnosis. ECU’s do remember how the car way driven, in that they do adjust for driving styles. They re-adjust as well though, so that shouldn’t be an issue now.

What causes high oil consumption on BMW 320i?
The Mazda6 is very good and great for the price but the Mercedes C-Class wagon is a couple of steps further up the ladder and an excellent car if you have the money. The PCV valve and the vacuum pump are the most likely causes of the high oil consumption, and although you say they have been done I would strongly suggest you recheck them.
If possible get the 320d efficient dynamics, its more powerful, more reliable and has the best mileage from all the BMWs cars (45 mpg+). When I bought my 320d I looked at all their engines and 320i seems underpowered and has low mpg. It seems that 320i might develop CCV and vacuum pump failures on higher mileage.
