Is there a problem with my Astra TwinPort idle?

I’ve got idling issues with my Astra. The problem started the other day. When idling the revs will drop slightly then surge up and then settle. It will do this about every 10 seconds while idling. This is the only symptom I have cos otherwise the car runs fine. Can anyone throw any light on this?

Where is the idle control valve on a Vauxhall Astra?

The culprit will probably be the Idle Control Valve (ICV) which is located on the top of the inlet manifold. The ICV acts as a gate allowing varying amounts of air into the engine. However they are known to stick.

Where is the idle button on an Astra SXI?

It’s on the side of the cylinder head. It looks a bit awkward to get off. Just held on by four bolts but the bottom two look a pig to get to. Will do I’ll post up as soon as I’ve done it.

Why does my Vauxhall Astra engine keep sticking?

However they are known to stick. Then they either let too much air into the engine, possibly causing high revs, or not enough starving it of air and causing the engine to almost or actually cut out. Remove the wiring connector and three bolts that hold the ICV in place.

Why is coolant not flowing in my Astra?

The car’s heater uses hot coolant as its heat source, so if no heat comes out then its likely that coolant isn’t flowing. Of course, this isn’t a guarantee, but its a good place to start. Also you might see the coolant moving if the coolant bottle is clear. Also confirm that the engine is actually getting hot (do you feel heat in the engine bay?).

Are there any known issues with the Holden Astra?

ignition coils – these have an unfortunate design of sitting on top of the engine where the PCB is exposed to relatively high heat so constant expansion/contraction of joints. Apart from that, we didn’t really have much trouble except the fuel consumption was quite high considering the size of the car – Sydney city driving at 10-12L/100km.
